Romi Giving Back

 Giving Back

I believe we all have a responsibility to pay it forward, and it makes life so much richer. Whether all you can spare are a few bucks a week or a few hours a year, I encourage you to find causes that mean a lot to you and give money, time and your talents to them. Our world needs you, and I promise you’ll be rewarded exponentially. Here are some of the causes dear to my heart that focus on the health, education and empowerment of others in the US and around the world. I hope it inspires you, and I invite you to join me in supporting these extraordinary organizations!

BOOK TRUST

Proceeds from Get Over Your Damn Self are funding school literacy programs with this visionary organization.

Book Trust exists because of a single, sad fact: There are thousands of children in America who would like nothing better than to read, but have no books.

The picture is pretty stark – in low-income areas, there is just 1 book for every 300 children. Book Trust empowers kids from low-income families to choose and buy their own books, all through the school year. And their focus on book choice and ownership is no accident. Studies show that children are much more likely to read books that they choose, and having books at home brings proven benefits. Book Trust is all about helping kids build home libraries full of books they want to read, and helping teachers use those books in the classroom to build healthy habits of reading and learning.

Best of all, the approach really works. Over a school year, the percentage of Book Trust students reading at grade level jumps from 31 percent to 59 percent.

As a mother, this cause is particularly dear to my heart. I would love for you to join me in spreading the gift of literacy across the nation. Learn more at www.booktrust.org.

Room to Read Romi

ROOM TO READ

Because of the huge success of my book in its first year, I was able to fund the creation of literacy programs at two schools in the Mpumalanga region of South Africa. Thousands of kids will be able to enjoy school libraries and teacher training and support.

If all children in low-income countries left school with basic reading skills, 171 million people could be lifted out of poverty. And a child born to a literate woman is twice as likely to survive past age five. I'm thrilled to support Room to Read’s innovative model that focuses on deep, systemic transformation within schools in Asia and Africa, creating a model that can be replicated, localized and sustained by governments. Room to Read is transforming educational experiences and impacting future generations with a belief that World Change Starts with Educated Children.®

Room to Read has benefited 10 million children across 17,500 communities in Asia and Africa, and aims to reach 15 million children by 2020. Learn more at www.roomtoread.org.

WOMEN UNITED FOR CHANGE

Women United for Change

I’m honored to be a Founding Member of this movement to help women in developing countries so they too can know what it feels like to change their lives, their family’s lives and their communities.

Along with my fellow members, I feel a responsibility to help women in developing countries so they too can know what it feels like to change their lives, their family’s lives and their communities. Just $50 allows one woman to go through the entire empowerment program of PCI (Project Concern International), teaching her a wealth of business skills and providing the support to start her own small business. This leads to independence and earning power she otherwise would never know. To date, more than $200,000 has been raised, allowing 4,000 women in Guatemala to enter the program. These women are now learning to:

- read and write for the first time
- have the courage to stand in front of a room and lead others
- handle and invest money
- have a bigger voice in their home environments and communities
- develop a business and have financial independence for the first time ever
- create better opportunities for their kids
- believe they are WORTH more, and can create a different future than what they’ve seen reflected in the women around them.
